The 1955 Chevrolet Corvette looked like the 1953 Corvette and 1954 Corvette models. However, Chevrolet’s new 265 cubic inch 195 horsepower V-8 was now available. All but 6 of the 674 units had the new V-8 which was more powerful and weighed less than the old six. The 55 Corvette quickly built a following and reputation on the streets.

The 1955 Corvette’s performance was stunning. It could go 0-60 mph in 8.5 seconds. Do the 1/4 mile in 16.5 seconds and had a top speed of 120 mph. Test also recorded the gas mileage between 18 and 22 mpg. Forty three percent of all 1955 Chevrolet’s were equipped with the new V-8.

The 1955 Chevrolet Corvette glass reinforced plastic bodies were smoother and had improved workmanship. By 1955, Chevrolet could boast that it built the only true American built sports car.

The 1955 Corvette was a big leap forward in styling and engineering. Unfortunately the new V-8 engine wasn’t enough to bail out Chevrolet’s new American sports car. Only about 700 units were produced in 1955. Unit price was only $2934.00.
